About

I grew up on a traditional mixed farm in the West-Flemish countryside. As the child of farmers, working with my hands started at a young age. I was learning to fix bikes by age 7. I was taught stick-welding and got into small engine mechanics before I turned 14. As for schooling I ended up in theoretical mechanics.

Artistic endeavors were generally discouraged during those years.

My artistic development exploded in my early twenties in a period of exploration, experimentation, self-reflection, and self-development.

I taught myself to paint through intuitive exploration, and this remained my main mode of artistic expression for close to 15 years.

Several of those years I dedicated to studying moral philosophy at the University of Ghent. Depression and suicidal ideation kept me from graduating. I got into Vipassana mediation which helped me tremendously, and set me off travelling as a volunteer, helping out in meditation centers and permaculture projects. That’s how I ended up in Makvärket, a community project in an old ceramics factory in the danish countryside that I’m engaged in to this day.

That factory gave my time, space, materials, tools, machines, and friends who were willing to share their skills as I was in turn. I learned carpentry and significantly improved my metalworking skills, and both of those fields eventually led into artistry. Artistry which I again developed intuitively and which I continue to do so.

Some artists find what works for them and then keep doing that over and over.

If that was the only option, I’m not sure I’d be an artist.

There is always a next step, a progression, a new angle of approach. It’s the search, the exploration, that inspires me.

To express something I haven’t before. To figure out how to do something that I haven’t tried yet. To challenge myself, attuned to the level of challenge that I’m ready for.
